Al-Jazeera Video: Egypt satirist back on air after questioning .

Egypt's administrative court rejects the case filed by a Brotherhood lawyer to suspend Bassem Youssef's Jon-Stewart-like political satire programme

Ahram Online

"The popular El Bernameg TV programme by satirist Bassem Youssef will continue being aired for now after an administrative court dismissed a lawsuit on Saturday calling for the programme to be suspended.

The court rejects the case, filed by a Muslim Brotherhood lawyer Mahmoud Abul Enein, saying the plaintiff does not have the right to ask for the programme to be suspended.
Abul Enein had also demanded in the same lawsuit that CBC channel's license be revoked for hosting Youssef's show, arguing the channel airs inappropriate content that is "beyond acceptable criticism" of President Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.
Youssef is currently being investigated by the prosecution for other complaints of insulting the president and religion on his programme. The popular satirist was released on bail pending investigation on Sunday."

Israel/OPT: Stop use of excessive force against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank

"Israel’s military response to protests in the West Bank is failing to respect the human rights of Palestinians, Amnesty International said today as the number of Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli fire in the area since the beginning of 2013 reached eight.

Ongoing Palestinian protests against the Israeli occupation have further escalated this week following renewed anger over detention conditions of Palestinian political detainees and prisoners, including the death in custody of Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh, a Palestinian prisoner with cancer held by Israel since 2002.

The protests look set to continue following the deaths of two Palestinian teenagers who were killed by Israeli forces at a military post near the settlement of Enav in the northern West Bank on Wednesday.

“For years we and other human rights organizations have documented how the Israeli army has used excessive force against protesters in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, often resulting in unlawful killings and injuries,” said Ann Harrison, Amnesty |nternational’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.
“Israel must take urgent steps to ensure its forces in the West Bank limit the use of live fire to situations when their own lives or others are genuinely in danger in order to avoid further unlawful deaths and injuries.”
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs documented more than 1,000 injuries of Palestinian civilians by Israeli forces in the West Bank during January and February 2013......"

Assad suffers new blow as Hamas switches sides to aid rebels

Times

"The military wing of Hamas, a former ally of President Assad, is training the rebel Free Syrian Army in eastern Damascus. Diplomatic sources said that members of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades were training FSA units in the rebel-held neighbourhoods of Yalda, Jaramana and Babbila......"

Al-Jazeera Video: Thanks to the IMF and the Muslim Brothers, Egyptians unhappy about fuel price hike

"Egypt is in talks to get a desperately needed loan from the International Monetary Fund. In order to secure the multi-billion dollar cash injection, the government is having to curb decades-old subsidies. Egyptians are already feeling the pinch after the government raised the price of butane gas for the first time in twenty years. Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh reports from Cairo."

More face charges in Egypt’s escalating free speech and dissent crackdown

Amnesty International

"Today’s charges against yet another comedian for ‘defaming religion’ are part of an alarming new escalation of politically-motivated judicial harassment and arrests, Amnesty International has said.

In a mounting crackdown on freedom of expression, up to 33 people have been targeted within the last two weeks, with arrests and charges.

Some have been charged with what seem to be politically motivated or trumped-up criminal charges. Others are charged with ‘insulting the President’ or ‘defamation’ of religion for actions that should not be criminalized as they merely amount to the peaceful exercise of freedom of expression.

“We are seeing arrests and charges for literally nothing more than cracking a few jokes. This is a truly alarming sign of the government’s increasing intolerance of any criticism whatsoever,” said Ann Harrison, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“There is no sign of this campaign of judicial harassment coming to an end.    The government is seriously redoubling its efforts to stamp out freedom of expression.”

Those targeted have included the country’s most famous political satirist Bassem Youssef, opposition activists, bloggers, and a high profile opposition politician.

Today, stand-up comedian Ali Qandil was interrogated at the public prosecutor’s office on charges of ‘defamation of religion’ on Bassem Youssef’s satirical television show. Qandil denied insulting Islam, emphasizing that he poked fun at the exploitation of religion, rather than the religion itself.  He was released on bail........."

Insight: Syrian guerrilla fighters being sent to Iran for training

"(This article was reported by a journalist in Syria whose name is withheld for security reasons)

HOMS PROVINCE, Syria (Reuters) - The Syrian government is sending members of its irregular militias for guerrilla combat training at a secret base in Iran, in a move to bolster its armed forces drained by two years of fighting and defections, fighters and activists said.

The discreet program has been described as an open secret in some areas loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, who is trying to crush a revolt against his family's four-decade hold on power.

Reuters interviewed four fighters who said they were taken on the combat course in Iran, as well as opposition sources who said they had also been documenting such cases.

Israel's intelligence chief and a Western diplomat have said Iran, Assad's main backer, is helping to train at least 50,000 militiamen and aims to increase the force to 100,000 - though they did not say where the training occurred......."

How Turkey's regional ambitions crumbled

By Ramzy Baroud
Asia Times

"Pre-Arab Spring Turkey seemed to have found a magical non-confrontational formula to resolve historic regional tensions, with the ruling Justice and Development Party proclaiming its re-election victory in 2011 as a win for countries stretching from the Balkans to North Africa and Central Asia. The euphoria died when the flames of Syria's sectarian violence licked Turkey's borders, forcing it back towards Israel.......

"Confused" may be an appropriate term to describe Turkey's current foreign policy in the Middle East and in Israel in particular. The source of that confusion - aside from the appalling violence in Syria and earlier in Libya - is Turkey's own mistakes.

The Turkish government's inconsistency regarding Israel highlights earlier discrepancies in other political contexts.......

Erdogan's office responded: "Erdogan told Benyamin Netanyahu that he valued the centuries-long strong friendship and cooperation between the Turkish and Jewish nations." According to Netanyahu, the apology over the "operational mistakes" had everything to do with the need to share intelligence over Syria between both of the countries' militaries. To balance out Turkey's hurried retreat to its old political foreign policy, Erdogan is reportedly planning to visit Gaza in April......"

Tunisia and Egypt need the Arab revolutions to spread

Conflict over religion and identity risks diverting attention from the battle for social justice and national independence

".....How far the Arab revolutions will go – and whether they deliver to their people or lapse back into western clientalism – evidently isn't settled. It will depend on social pressure at home, but also whether they reach the western-backed autocracies now trying to control the process. But one thing is clear: the further democratisation spreads, the greater the chance the Arabs can take control of their own future."

Who are the Muslim Brotherhood?

The Arab Spring gave the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates the chance to play vital roles in the Egyptian, Tunisian and Libyan revolutions. But now the organisation has itself become the target of violent protests. So, who are these men and how did they get where they are?

"........The charge sheet against the Ikhwan – as the organisation is known in Arabic – is long. But if it was melted down to a single criticism, it might be this: democracy does not end at the ballot box – and yet the Brotherhood and its affiliates behave as if it does.

In particular, the opposition is furious at how – in an act seen as that of a dictator – Morsi awarded himself sweeping powers in November to ram through a deeply controversial new constitution. The document had been drawn up by a committee dominated by allies of the Brotherhood. It is felt to be ambiguous about free speech, women's rights, and minorities, while paving the way for an Islamic state.
At a time when a polarised Egypt urgently needs to build political consensus, Morsi has also been criticised for appointing allies to key positions within the Egyptian administrative hierarchy. "The general concern," explains Khaled Fahmy, head of history at the American University in Cairo, "is about the Ikhwanisation of the state."......."

Syrian rebel fighters blast Muslim Brotherhood for 'delaying victory'

The National

"ANTAKYA, TURKEY // Syrian rebel fighters have accused the Muslim Brotherhood of undermining the revolt against Bashar Al Assad and trying to dictate opposition politics.

Rebel officers said the Brotherhood was putting narrow factional politicking over the broad interests of the revolt.
"We hold you responsible for delaying victory of the revolution and the fragmentation of the opposition," the Joint Command of the Free Syrian Army said in an open letter to the Muslim Brotherhood.
There was a "deep confrontation" within the opposition between the Muslim Brotherhood and other secular, national and military factions, the FSA said.

Anti-Brotherhood sentiments, particularly in Damascus, were running high, the FSA warned, with growing anger at efforts by the group to control military and humanitarian relief efforts administered by the Syrian National Coalition, the opposition bloc given Syria's seat in the Arab League at a summit last week.
A significant majority of its members are directly or indirectly allied to the Muslim Brotherhood, much to the dismay of other rebel factions who say the group's representation in the SNC political chambers vastly outweighs its street presence inside Syria......"

Games the US Plays

The Guardian

The US’s reluctance to arm the Syrian rebels or get involved in the conflict directly is partly due to America’s wish not to upset Iran at a critical time in nuclear negotiations, Javier Solana, the former EU foreign policy chief, has said.

"......

The US’s reluctance to arm the Syrian rebels or get involved in the conflict directly is partly due to America’s wish not to upset Iran at a critical time in nuclear negotiations, Javier Solana, the former EU foreign policy chief, said yesterday:
I think that the United States has not taken a more active role in Syria from the beginning because they didn't want to disturb the possibility, to give them space, to negotiate with Iran. They probably knew that getting very engaged against Assad, engaged even militarily, could contribute to a break in the potential negotiations with Tehran.
Solana was one of the negotiators with Iran until 2009.
James F Jeffrey, a former US ambassador to Iraq, agreed, telling the Associated Press:
Resolving the nuclear impasse with Iran is the biggest challenge this year in the Middle East, and that requires careful handling of not only Iran, but Russia and China. Decisions on Syria and other international questions certainly will be taken in this context......"

Leading Palestinians to the Dark Ages: Hamas to ban men teaching at girls' schools

Critics of new measures say Islamist movement ruling the Gaza Strip is trying to force its ideology on society

guardian.co.uk
New rules from the education ministry of the Islamist Hamas movement ruling the Gaza Strip will bar men from teaching at girls' schools and mandate separate classes for boys and girls from the age of nine.
The law, published on Monday, would go into effect in the next school year and apply throughout the coastal enclave, including in private, Christian-led and United Nations schools.
Critics of the new measures say the Islamist movement is trying to force its ideology on society, but proponents say they merely want to codify conservative Palestinian values into law......."

Stewart mocks Morsi over Bassem Youssef arrest

Daily Show's Jon Stewart slams President Morsi for clamping down on freedom of speech after Bassem Youssef arrested

Ahram Online

"Top US satirist Jon Stewart has dedicated a section of his Daily Show to condemning and mocking President Mohamed Morsi over the arrest of Bassem Youssef.

The prosecutor-general issued an arrest warrant against TV satirist Bassem Youssef on Saturday after complaints were made against him for allegedly insulting the president, denigrating Islam and spreading false news with the aim of disrupting public order.
Youssef was released on bail of LE15,000 ($2,142).

Stewart mocked President Morsi for targeting media figures and activists instead of dealing with Egypt's growing economic and social problems.

The deteriorating economy, crumbling infrastructure and rising levels of sexual harassment were amongst the things President Morsi should be focusing on, Stewart said.

Stewart wondered what would happen to him if insulting the president was illegal in the US.
"Making fun of the president's hats and less than fluent English? That was my entire career for eight years ... that is all I did," he said, showing a picture of himself wearing a cowboy hat and mocking George W. Bush.
Stewart played a video showing President Morsi describing Jews as the descendants of apes and pigs in order to highlight the weakness and hypocrisy of the accusations against Youssef.
"There are two things he [Youssef] loves with his heart: Egypt and Islam ... He loves Egypt so much even though some crazy guy is threatening to arrest him," Stewart said.
"By the way, without Bassem and all those journalists and bloggers and brave protesters who took to Tahrir Square to voice descent, you, President Morsi, would not have been in a position to repress them," he added.
Youssef appeared on The Daily Show with John Stewart in June last year and has acknowledged that Stewart is an inspiration for his own El Barnameg TV show."

Al-Jazeera Video:Syria citizen journalists target opposition

"Syria's opposition is made of many groups with different agendas - some call it democracy in the making, others say the new reality in rebel-held areas has its own set of problems. Citizen journalists who used to report on abuses carried out by President Bashar al-Assad now cover issues emerging in 'liberated' areas: guns, lawlessness, theft, kidnapping and lack of services. Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr reports from Aleppo."

Egypt's top prosecutor orders arrest of hit TV satirist

Critics damn move against Bassem Youssef, Egypt's Jon Stewart, whose show, al-Bernameg, gets over 30 million viewers

"Egypt's top prosecutor has ordered the arrest of the Middle East's most popular TV satirist for allegedly insulting both Islam and the Egyptian president.
The case has heightened concerns about the future of free speech in Egypt, as it comes only a day after nine opposition activists and four lawyers were arrested in Alexandria – and less than a week after five prominent activists were cited for encouraging protests against theMuslim Brotherhood, whose affiliates lead Egypt's government.
Bassem Youssef, who is known as Egypt's Jon Stewart, rose to prominence following the country's 2011 uprising. His show attracts over 30 million viewers across the Middle East, has previously been sued several times by private individuals. But this is the first time that the prosecutor general, Talaat Abdallah, has followed up one of their complaints with legal action – a deeply symbolic gesture that suggests the Islamist-led regime of Mohamed Morsi is now prepared to take a more authoritarian stance against its critics.
Youssef's show, al-Bernameg, critiques both fundamentalist clerics and Morsi – whose face Youssef once controversially projected on to a pillow – and is seen as a triumph for free speech in the post-Mubarak era.
But that rosy view has been rocked by the prosecutor's intervention, the significance of which was forewarned earlier this month in an interview with the Guardian, when Youssef ominously said: "You can't prevent people from suing us. The tipping point would be if these law suits are activated by the attorney general."
This weekend that tipping point arrived, and it was received furiously by the government's opponents.
"Pathetic efforts to smother dissent and intimidate media is a sign of a shaky regime and a bunker mentality," tweeted Mohamed ElBaradei, the leader of Egypt's main opposition coalition.
Youssef's arrest is doubly concerning for Egypt's disparate opposition because it comes so soon after Abdallah also accused five anti-Brotherhood activists of using social media to incite violence against the Muslim Brotherhood. But in their most recent tweets, some of the activists were actively critical of violence. This has prompted fears that their arrest was a politically motivated ruse to crack down on prominent critics of the government.
Abdallah's actions also renewed concerns about Egypt's "Brotherhoodisation", a term used by critics of the regime to imply that the Muslim Brotherhood has used its influence to appoint its allies to administrative positions whose roles are meant to be politically neutral. Abdallah himself has long been considered such a politicised appointment, after Morsi controversially circumvented constitutional protocol to promote him in November. Abdallah's decision to arrest the activists and Youssef adds to this impression, particularly as it immediately followed a promise by Morsi to punish those who had incited violence against the Brotherhood. To add to the mess, a judge this weekruled that Abdallah's appointment was illegal – but Abdallah himself refused to stand down."

Bassem Youssef arrives at court in satirical style

Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef arrives at High Court wearing outsized version of hat worn by President Morsi in Pakistan university ceremony; rejects claims he 'insulted' president and Islam on TV show

Ahramonline

"Renowned TV satirist Bassem Youssef arrived at Egypt's High Court on Sunday morning in response to an arrest warrant submitted by the country's top prosecutor.

Youssef turned up at the court wearing an outsized version of the hat worn by President Morsi when he received an honorary doctorate from a university in Pakistan in early March.

The prosecutor-general ordered Youssef’s arrest on Saturday after a number of complaints were made against him for allegedly insulting President Mohamed Morsi, denigrating Islam and spreading false news with the aim of disrupting public order.

During a phone interview with popular TV anchor Lamees El-Hadidy on Saturday night, Bassem Youssef rejected the accusation that he had insulted Islam.

We are not the ones who insult religion, all we do is expose the channels that have misused religion and harmed it more than anyone else. If there is anyone who has insulted religion it is those who use Islam as a weapon for political reasons,” he said, adding that he is determined defy those who “have disfigured my religion [of Islam].”......."
